The Radio Nacional de Espana (RNE) is the Spanish government's national radio station. It began in 1937 and is headquartered in Pozuelo de Alarcon. It has two separate radio networks. The first network is a generalist channel, while the second is a music channel.

RNE's first transmitter was built by Telefunken and was given to Francoist Spain by the Third Reich. It had a broadcasting power of 20 kW. RNE began retransmitting Spanish news from official radio stations of Germany and Italy. It also began to collaborate with Axis powers during the Second World War.

After the Second World War, RNE expanded its coverage. It began a second network that used FM transmitters. It also established a network of regional broadcasting centers. These centers broadcast the same signal from Madrid, but could opt out of certain times for local news.

RNE's external services underwent a comprehensive reform in 1975. Private broadcasters were no longer required to connect with RNE for daily news bulletins. Instead, they could choose to broadcast programmes in Spanish. This was a major step in the reform of the RNE.

In the 1970s, Tercer Programa was expanded to include educational programming and musical themes. This expanded RNE's coverage to the entire country.
