Difference between foam and algorithm in openfoam

  1. Can any one please help me to find out the difference between foam and algorithm e.g. pisofoam and PISO algorithm, pimplefoam and PIMPLE algorithm, simplefoam and SIMPLE algorithm etc.
  2. I also saw that script with PISO algorithm in icoFoam and icoDyMFoam.

Thank You.

Ram

Dear Ram,

I would refer you to the textbook An Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics: The Finite Volume Method by H. Versteeg and W. Malalasekera for the explanation on various CFD algorithms (PISO,SIMPLE, PIMPLE etc.).
About your question on icoFoam, yes it does use PISO algorithm. But it is different from pisoFoam in that, icoFoam cannot handle turbulence, while pisoFoam can. Also, while pisoFoam can handle non-Newtonian fluids, icoFoam cannot and to handle non-Newtonian behaviours, OpenFOAM has a variant of icoFoam solver called nonNewtonianIcoFoam.

Ashley

Thanks!!

I will definitely visit this book (The Finite Volume Method by H. Versteeg and W. Malalasekera).
