Update not installed - not signed?

The following update is shown on the RDP for the last few days:

linux-libc-dev (4.19.1-iitb-1)

However, it does not get installed. The message in a bubble says:

Cannot install from unsigned repo
The following packages cannot be authenticated:

It seems you might have received the laptop recently.

If so, you will have to apply two updates (update-2-offline & update-4) from this link:

https://ld.iitb.ac.in/Software%20Updates

Please check the pdf link in update-2-offline for the instructions.
Once you apply both the updates, kindly reboot the laptop and try 'sudo apt update' again.

Let me know if you still have the issue.

No, I am unable to deploy Update 2. I followed the instructions, downloaded the zip file, unzipped it, checked that it has execute persmissions, and then:

user@bhanu:~$ ./update-2-offline.run
Creating directory /tmp/payload
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing update 2 offlineExtraction failed.
Terminated
user@bhanu:~$

What now?

Ps. My RDP is among the first ones to be delivered, but I recently reinstalled using the ISO as instructed elsewhere on this forum. Everything else is working fine, except this issue.

This is new, the script has terminated!
The update-2-offline.run file tries to create a directory in /tmp, I hope your /tmp permissions are intact.

Any, you may directly import the GPG key with

wget -qO - https://gitlab.com/iitb-rdp-linux-laptop/iitb-laptop-updates/raw/master/update-2.offline/payload/PUBKEY.txt | sudo apt-key add -

Then, try 'sudo apt update'

The result of uname -a was:
before this: Linux bhanu 4.14.13-iitb-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Feb 12 17:57:04 IST 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux
after this: Linux bhanu 4.19.1-iitb #1 SMP Wed Nov 7 16:44:41 IST 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Question: What happened to the -amd64 part?

Current status:

1. When logging in, the laptop makes a shrill whistling sound for about 5 s.
2. The laptop has become slow (definitely).
3. The kdewallet keeps on prompting (I do not want to use it).

Will try out other functions / programs later.

Thanks, this works. The 'uninstallable update' gets installed without any issues.

However, now the speakers have come alive and provide a whistle whenever they feel like.

I cannot play any audio / video file (using vlc, for example). All I hear is a shrieking sound!

Needs a fix. I went to settings and muted the 'output sound'.
(System settings > Multimedia >
Applications tab > mute
Output devices tab > mute

But even then the shrieking continues.

Needs a fix!

This is expected as we were unable to use the update-2-offline.
Could you please share the output of "uname -a" command?

Also, let us investigate why update-2-offline.run file has failed.
Please try the running the script as sudo (or as root [passwd: debian]) and check if it works.

sudo ./update-2-offline.run

This is the result of using sudo:

gaitonde@bhanu:~ >sudo ./update-2-offline.run

Uncompressing update 2 offline
Not the IIT RDP Laptop, exiting.

The last line is upsettiing!! My machine unable to identify itself??

The previous output of uname -a was:
Linux bhanu 4.14.13-iitb-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Feb 12 17:57:04 IST 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And now it is:
Linux bhanu 4.19.1-iitb #1 SMP Wed Nov 7 16:44:41 IST 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What happened to the -amd64?

21-09-19, 10:01 p.m. gaitonde
Please ignore the missing 'amd64' tag with the new kernel.
It seems your machine is from a slightly different lot, I hope it is not as serious as it seems.
The run file checks the BIOS version and spits the error if the version mismatch (just to avoid accidental damage to non-target laptops).

I'm suspecting that your laptop has a different version of BIOS, so please try the alternate file from the given link, if it succeeds, then try update-4.run as instructed earlier in this thread.

Thanks.
The result(s) of your latest suggestion:

The file on Google Drive was a zip file. Downloaded it, unzipped it. And then:

Further instructions awaited!

22-09-19, 8:40 a.m. gaitonde
It seems your laptop has neither of the BIOS versions, very strange!
Maybe it updated itself silently, highly unlikely though.
We have tried both versions, the default version worked with 99% devices, and the few new ones had BIOS 09.05.

I understand that you have reinstalled using the ISO we share in this forum, which confirms that the device is definitely an RDP 11" laptop.
I will be sharing this last version of update-2-offline file which doesn't check for the hardware and will execute without any warning, so, please
DO NOT run it on any device other than the RDP laptop. I will remove the link once you use it and report.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FyiuioaYjk4HoxiPg1uld4feV5C3voG2/view?usp=sharing

Please unzip the file 'update-2-offline-nocheck.run.zip' and try with 'sudo' as you did before.

Also, please share the output of the following commands:
a) cat /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_date
b) cat /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_version

The bios details are:

gaitonde@bhanu:~ >cat /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_date
11/07/2017
gaitonde@bhanu:~ >cat /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_version
WH-BI-14-Y116CR510-CC54B-095-A
gaitonde@bhanu:~ >

I will now attempt the 'nocheck' update.

Wait for a follow-up within the hour!

22-09-19, 4:09 p.m. gaitonde
Thanks for sending the BIOS details, and good that you decided not to apply the nocheck version. Hold on for now.
The BIOS version and date are indeed a new find. Before we proceed further I would request you the output of the file

cat /sys/class/dmi/id/uevent

Thanks for having the patience.

The script seems to have done a lot of things.

--- rebooted ---

Booted fine. No shrieks. But no sound of any kind!

Srikant: If you (or anyone else) wants physical custody of this machine to get to the bottom of this, I will hand it over. Do let me know.

Thanks for sharing the output log.
Everything seems fine from the script end, as we have disabled the checks so it simply did what it was intended to do.
It has installed audio drivers for rt5651, but as your BIOS details are different it is likely that you have a different audio chipset.
Unlike regular laptops, these embedded atom chipsets need special attention, the audio/wifi drivers are generally not found in
the mainline Linux kernel!

Anyway, please share the output of

cat /sys/class/dmi/id/uevent

I will also try to arrange a pickup for your laptop as it seems you stay inside the campus. I will write a separate email to you.

Wait! Wait! I rebooted Bhanu once more, and now it has regained its voice. Let me check once again!

Yes! It works. I hope this is not just some random behaviour.

BTW, my offer still stands: Srikant: If you (or anyone else) wants physical custody of this machine to get to the bottom of this, I will hand it over. Do let me know.

This is great, but please do share the output of

cat /sys/class/dmi/id/uevent

This will help me pinpoint the laptop you're using.

Thank you very much, Srikant, for all the help!

Thank you for sharing this output. Now I clearly know that this isn't from any of the RDP lots we have with us.
Our output has the OEM details filled as 'RDPThinBook1310'.
The only common fields are 'rnCherryTrailCR'.
Anyway, it seems you have a very early evaluation version of the laptop probably received directly from Prof. Kannan's office.

I request you to check all components, such as audio through speakers/headphones, wifi connectivity, strength etc, let me know if
you find any anomaly.
If everything works fine then I do not wish to investigate further.

Yes, this is a very early RDP, but received from RDP, although Prof Kannan's project people (Khan, etc.) were involved.

I will check the stuff I use and inform you within a few days. I mainly use:

Chrome browser - works!
TeX and LaTeX and associated programs - will check
VLC media player -works, but need to check out the headphones
Openvpn for entering IITB from outside - works!

Sound related: vlc, dragonplayer work fine with speakers. However, there is a problem with earphones. When the earphone jack in pushed in, the speakers get muted, but there is no output from the headphones. The speakers remain muted even after the jack is pulled out. Needs a reboot for the speakers to come alive! I am not going to chase this, since I hardly use earphones with the RDP.

Will try out Bluetooth headphones later.

Thanks for the updates.
The update-2-offline has downgraded the kernel to 4.19.0-rc7 which has issues with audio jack detection.
I request you to kindly apply the update-4 now. It can be easily done with this command:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y linux-image-4.19.1-iitb

Restart and then try the audio jack detection again.
Let me know the progress.

Result of uname -a:

Linux bhanu 4.19.1-iitb #1 SMP Wed Nov 7 16:44:41 IST 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Sound issue: No change. Speakers work, earphones do not (the earphones are fine, work well with a MacBoook and with a mobile phone). Once the earphones are inserted, speakers mute, and a reboot is needed to unmute them.

I think I uploaded this response at about 1230 today, but somehow it was not recorded. Or, maybe I missed pressing the all-important [Submit Answer]!

Hello! It seems my follow-ups are not getting uploaded on the forum.

Is it? Sorry for the inconvenience.
Let me reach out to our web team and find out if they could retrieve the messages.

By the way,
did you tried

sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y linux-image-4.19.1-iitb

post that, does the audio jack detection worked?

My first attempt at working the earphones failed. However, noticed that after maybe a cople of bootings, it is now fine.
The earphones work just as expected.

So, I think the RDP laptop is now in a neat, stable, state.

I will keep all the information and scripts in an archive, so that I can recreate this state in case it is needed.

Thank you very much, Shrikant!

Yes, I tried, but my posting here is not getting uploaded. I do not have your e-mail address, so maybe I will pass on my message to Mr Khan, requesting that it be forwarded to you. Just after my crib about non-uploading, I posted the log. But that vanished!

Yes, it worked! Thank you very much. I hope I am able to get the log to you somehow.
