Recovry from hung computer

Sometimes my Affordable laptop hangs. I believe there are a number of ways one can recover in a linux system. The tricks I had learnt for Ubuntu did not work on my laptop. Ctrl-Alt-Del also doesn't work. Someone please tell me

1. What I need to do so that laptop does not hang?

2. If it hangs, how do I recover? Can one directly communicate with the kernel?

Thanks

I have few follow up questions, it will help us narrow down the cause:

  1. Does it always use to hang? Or its after some recent updates?
  2. Please send us the Kernel version by running this on the terminal
    1. uname -a
  3. When you say hang, you mean both mouse and keyboard are unresponsive? Do you have to hard reset the laptop then?

The Ctrl-Alt-Del to open terminal works with Ubuntu GTK based distros, we have KDE installed on Debian-9. However, you can use KDE Global keyboard settings tool to assign the same combination to open the Konsole.

1. It seems to hang when Libre Office has a doc file open. In the beginning there were no incidents of hanging that were noticed. Now it seems to be happening once in 2 to 3 days or so.

2. uname -a yields
Linux debian 4.19.0-rc7-iitb #2 SMP Sat Oct 13 17:46:44 IST 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

3. Yes, when it hangs keyboard and mouse both don't respond. I have to hard reset the laptop by keeping the power button pressed.

This seems to be a bug in the LibreOffice. Could you send the exact version of LibreOffice, please?
Meanwhile, you may try this https://askubuntu.com/a/999255/101713

Thanks Srikant, I have made the changes to LibreOffice options and hopefully the problem is sorted out.
